From the start of his career, Kendrick Lamar had a focus. He felt that the current state of rap music was not good. He felt that the most popular rappers had gone soft. Lamar wanted to get back to what he felt was the best part of rap, the crafting of words into amazing lines. He takes no prisoners when it comes to competing with other rappers. It got so bad for those he went up against, that they soon left Lamar to work on his own. Nobody could compete at his level. Soon enough, he was signed to a record label, TDE to be exact. That was when Lamar worked under the name of K-Dot.
In 2012, Lamar released "good kid, m.A.A.d city." Top Dawg entertainment pulled Lamar out of "indie label" obscurity, and Lamar was looking at a top 20 song on the rap charts by August of 2012. In just six short months since the release, Lamar's album went gold. Summerfest is happy to have Kendrick Lamar as one of their headline acts in 2015.
